October is a month for mental health awareness, reflection, and resilience. It includes Mental Illness Awareness Week (first full week of October) and World Mental Health Day on October 10—moments that call on all of us to break stigma, foster connection, and build cultures of care.
In the spirit of that mission, this month’s Greek Rugs Good News honors fraternities and sororities who are stepping up to support one another in meaningful, lasting ways.

1. University of Iowa: “Thriving Together” Mental Health Initiative
The University of Iowa’s IFC launched Thriving Together: Mental Health Resources for Greek Life, a dedicated resource campaign tailored to the unique needs of fraternity and sorority members. From strategic peer support to professional guidance, the program helps chapters lead with awareness and care.

2. The JED Foundation Supports Greek-Letter Mental Health
The JED Foundation has introduced a Technical Assistance Program specifically for fraternities and sororities. This groundbreaking initiative helps Greek organizations build and implement chapter-wide mental health strategies, covering crisis response, hazing prevention, substance misuse, and culture-building practices.

3. University of Arizona: Health Advocates Program in Greek Life
Greek Life at the University of Arizona offers a robust health and wellness program that includes a for-credit course where Greek members become Health Advocates. These students lead chapter programming on mental health, body image, alcohol safety, and more. Combined with the university’s Global Citizenship & Human Dignity program, Arizona’s Greeks are shaping a healthier, more inclusive Greek system.
